One way is to use the 7z.dll or 7za.dll (available from sf.net for download). The 7za.dll works via COM interfaces. It, however, doesn't use standard COM interfaces for creating objects. You can find a small example in "CPP\7zip\UI\Client7z" folder in the source code. A full example is 7-Zip itself, since 7-Zip works via this dll also. There are other applications that use 7za.dll such as WinRAR, PowerArchiver and others.
This meant that if you downloaded an archive from the Internet and extracted it with 7-zip, the Mark-of-the-Web would not propagate to the extracted files, and Windows would not treat the extracted files as risky.

For example, if you downloaded a ZIP file containing a Word document, the ZIP file would have a MoTW, but the extracted Word document would not. Therefore, Microsoft Office would not open the file in Protected View.

When downloading an entire folder as a zip file, some files within that folder with MIME text/plain appear in the zip with added extension .txt, even if their extension is different on Drive.For example, I had some .conf and .asc files, which ended being .conf.txt and .asc.txt in the resulting compressed archive, respectively.
This will compress the files without adding any weird file extensions. I haven't tried this on Mac or other compression programs. I believe this should work for any file extension since the files are downloaded to your hard drive.
